Handwoven African Shoulder Basket
TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK
Our shoulder baskets are used traditionally in Togo, West Africa to hold coins awarded to ceremonial dancers. Members of Alaffia basket cooperatives receive fair wages and health care for their families in return for indigenous skills and knowledge. This exchange empowers West African communities and preserves cultural heritage.
Care and Use: To reshape your basket, spray lightly with water, shape and air dry thoroughly. Avoid direct light for best color retention.
*Due to each basket’s one-of-a-kind characteristics, as well as the creative decision-making left to each weaver, the basket you receive may vary in color and pattern from the basket shown.

I've bought 3 or 4 shoulder baskets from Alaffia over the years. They are not only amazingly beautiful, but they also are a functional, everyday statement in support of fair trade, in support of gender equality, in support of cultural integrity. Proud to own them, and to have purchased many Alaffia baskets to wrap gifts in.
